🛟 i might regret this

or: the name of my first album

A couple of weeks ago I uninstalled Facebook and Instagram from my phone. I’m not a massive user of social media – my capacity to scroll is limited to about 90 seconds before I get bored – but even so, even for a very casual user like myself, the mental freedom of deleting those pernicious fucking apps was incredible.

I highly recommend giving it a go!

That’s not to say that I’m not using social media at all. I really need Facebook especially to find out about events and to keep track of my far flung friends, who are scattered about this globe like a mild case of dandruff. But I only log in via my browser, standing at my computer, a place where it’s very easy to scroll and switch to email and switch to Slack and switch to work and switch to Wikipedia and just generally skip about the internet without getting sucked into a social media sludge puddle.

There is one teensy problem, however: how will my far flung friends keep track of me if I’m no longer posting on the socials?

I’ve decided to go back to blogging! I know!

Wind your tired minds back to 2009, a gentler time, some say, a time when people blogged and had conversations online and nobody had ever heard of the manosphere, when Twitter was a nice place to find really interesting information and even GASP friends! New friends! People met via Twitter over some niche interest and fell in love and moved across countries and got married and LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER.

Yes, that Twitter. RIP that Twitter.

I’m heading off to Malaysia today and I do want to post pics and thoughts and rambles and observations. And instead of doing that on Facie or Insta, I’m gonna be doing right here on this odd old blog. And I’m gonna try to blog every day, at least while I’m away. Not saying it’s gonna be a regular thing after I get back in a few weeks, but I want to try it out now for an experiment.

[NOTE: every time that I’ve previously attempted to blog daily or even weekly, I have failed very quickly. I’m hoping this time will be different. The name of my second album.]

It does not escape me that the only way I can let you, my flung and scattered friends, know about my blog is to post on the line, as my mum says.  So I’ll be finally kicking off my Substack and using that to round up my posts every week, so sign up for that I guess if you want regular updates.

Yes, I might regret this. And yes, I may give up after a week or a day. But we can but try!

Now I’ve got to get back to my packing 🙂
