Reflecting on The Library script and production

It was a dark and stormy night when I bashed out the script for The Library. I’d had 15 beers and it was ready to go. I submitted it. I got accepted. It was staged brilliantly by a fantastic director and cast and won an award. And so started my playwriting career…

Well, it was something like that.

The beer part is true. The fantastic director and cast part is true. And it is true that that one act (ha! get it!?) has changed the course of my approach to storytelling.

But it’s only thinking back on it now that I realise how lucky I was. To be accepted was actually a big deal. To put together such a talented bunch of storytellers to bring it to life was a dream.

And it could have all been very different. I could have thought, “nah, the deadline is too soon. I won’t be able to submit anything.”

I could have submitted one of my earlier drafts, before getting input from a friend whose opinion I value, and sent in an inferior script.

I could have had one more beer and not hit send.

So the lesson here is: write that script! Enter that competition! Put on that play!

You never know where it will end up.
