How not to sell your book

I’m a member of a Facebook group called “Women Writers, Women’s Books“. It’s an online community of women writers and readers who share their stories and successes, interesting articles, and questions about plot or about publishing.

We recently had a discussion about why the group works better than other similar Facebook groups, and we agreed it was because everyone is very civil and we share information freely. Basically, we’re all polite. But the main thing is that self-promotion is kept to a minimum.

Writing a book is hard; getting it out there and into the hands of readers is harder. Writers employ lots of techniques to do this and it can become clear pretty quickly who is a born marketer and who isn’t.

Take this guy, who I just saw in my Twitter feed:

Spam my feed? Not cool.

I read a great post a few days ago about this very dreadful ‘technique’. Catherine Ryan Howard calls it “blatant, repetitive, smug and utterly pointless” and I couldn’t agree more.
